Bed wetting, also known as nocturnal enuresis, is the involuntary passage of urine during sleep at an age where one usually should have control of the bladder, many say by the age of 6 or 7. Bed wetting is not actually a disease, rather, it is a condition where kids commonly between the ages of 4 to 6, even if after they are potty trained, wet their bed still regardless of where they are. Wetting the bed however has been defined by psychologists of the widely known American Medical Association as a disease wherein the child affected repeatedly urinate his or her bed at least twice a week for 3 consecutive months in a child who is at least 5 years of age and has no abnormal medical condition and is not taking any medication. Furthermore, they say that the disease probably affects a child until 5 years of age on average.
Nocturnal enuresis is divided into two different types: primary nocturnal enuresis and secondary nocturnal enuresis.

Primary nocturnal enuresis is the most common type of bedwetting as it constitutes majority of the occurrences amounting to about 70% of the cases that is associated with bed wetting. Primary nocturnal enuresis or PNE is identified as when a child has never had an elongated period of being dry and has continued wetting the bed since his younger years. Medical opinions however, vary on what age a child is supposed to stay dry at night. Most medical doctors would begin diagnosing and identify a child as having primary enuresis as early as the age of 4 years old. Some researchers and doctors though, recommend the start of diagnosis of bed wetting as a medical disorder only when a child reaches the age of 7 and he or she still wets the bed regularly. Possible causes of Primary nocturnal enuresis are hereditary factors, behavioral and emotional stress, and small bladder capacity.
Secondary nocturnal enuresis or SNE on the other hand, is defined as bed wetting of a child or even an adult, after an extended period of staying dry usually at least about 6 months or more. To further explain, this type of bed wetting is commonly associated or called relapse bed wetting as the condition only presents itself after a prolonged period of dryness or when a child, a teen, or an adult begins wetting the bed again after outgrowing the disease. SNE is most common and present in geriatric patients and adults who are at an old age of about 80 or more. This type of bed wetting is commonly brought about by emotional stress, an underlying medical condition such as urinary tract infection, certain diuretic medications, and also old age.
